If you read the title and felt any type of visceral reaction, I am pretty sure you are NOT alone. In the U.S., especially in this THIS election, it seems to me most people are equating the success or failure of The United States of America over the next four years on the premise of if THEIR candidate wins. Wins what? The WHOLE premise of American democracy is that those who are lucky enough to be elected to public office are “given” the opportunity to “serve” the American public. Elected officials are SERVANTS. They are NOT gods nor dictators nor gladiators who have just vanquished a foe. They are not celebrities nor trendsetters nor business tycoons meant to rule the world. They are meant to be humble, honest, hard-working servants who only desire to serve the wishes and best interests of the American people to the best of their abilities. I work in education. When I am “offered” a position, I do not “win.” I am given the opportunity to serve every student in that school to the best of my abilities.
More Americans have expressed their wishes in this election than ever before. I am proud and hopeful that so many citizens of this country have expressed their voice. The citizens have spoken. Now, whoever wins, I only hope they are willing to listen as a humble, honest, and hard-working servant of the American people.
